During several centuries, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy minted the Franz Joseph gold ducat in order to facilitate trade between the empire and the rest of the world.
For this reason, the gold ducat did not have an official nominal value expressed in Austro-Hungarian currency; instead, its value was based on the value of the pure gold content from which it was made.
Although various sizes of ducats were minted throughout history in Austro-Hungarian mints, after the fall of the monarchy in 1918, the Austrian state mint Münze Österreich continued the production of ducats in two denominations:
– 1 Ducat gold coin, with a diameter of 20 mm, a total weight of 3.49 g, and a fine gold content of 3.44 g (0.1106 oz)
– 4 Ducat gold coin, with a diameter of 39.6 mm, a total weight of 13.96 g, and a fine gold content of 13.76 g (0.4424 oz)**
As they are still produced today in millions of pieces, the Franz Joseph gold ducat bearing the year 1915 is considered a pure investment coin, without additional numismatic value.
Gold ducats bearing other minting years may sometimes have additional numismatic value and are therefore not necessarily considered investment coins.
The Franz Joseph gold ducat is often given as a gift on special occasions such as baptisms, weddings, and anniversaries.
For all these reasons, the Franz Joseph gold ducat represents an excellent way to preserve personal wealth: it is easily recognizable and can be quickly converted into a liquid form of currency.
